College baseball: Indians lose baseball opener 1-0

Tampa, Fla. — Fifth-ranked Catawba was shut out by Barton 1-0 in Friday’s opener at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.
Catawba couldn’t take advantage of a great pitching effort by Greg Brown. He allowed three hits and one unearned run. He struck out eight in six innings.
Reliever DJ Laxton allowed only one hit in three innings.
Barton hurler Gentry Fortuno struck out 16 Indians and didn’t walk a batter.
The four hits for Catawba came from Zack Miller, Hunter Shepherd, Jeremy Simpson and Robbie Cowie.
Catawba takes on Columbus State in Tampa this afternoon.
