Area Sports: Carson at West tonight

Carson’s girls play at West Rowan tonight in the featured high school basketball game.

It’s Senior Night for the Falcons, who start five seniors, including the program’s all-time scoring leader Abigail Wilson.

Carson (19-3, 7-1) has had a tremendous season and is in first place in the North Piedmont Conference, but two of the Cougars’ three losses are to West Rowan — in the  Moir tournament championship game and at Carson (in overtime) in NPC play.

West (18-3, 6-2) has dropped NPC games to East Rowan and South Iredell, but is still in position to finish as the conference’s top team if it can beat Carson again.

Carson finishes the regular season Friday at home against South Iredell, while  West finishes at Statesville.

• West’s boys (12-8, 6-2)  are tied for first in the NPC with Statesville and will be trying to finish a sweep of the Cougars (11-11, 4-4).

• East Rowan’s teams are home tonight against Statesville.  East’s girls  (17-5, 5-3) could still tie for second  in the NPC if Carson wins at West tonight. East senior Adalie Harrison goes into tonight’s game with 985 career points.

• In the Central Carolina Conference, Salisbury’s girls (20-1, 16-0) already have clinched the title. They’re hosting North Davidson (16-6, 12-4) and standout sophomore Emily Hege tonight.

It will be Senior Night for the Hornets, including 1,200-point scorer Anayia Fulson.

• Salisbury’s boys (14-7, 11-5) are in third place. North Davidson (18-4, 14-2) is tied for first with Lexington. Jamarien Dalton and Tedric Jenkins are the  standouts for the Black Knights.

Salisbury wraps up the regular season on Friday at  South Rowan.

• South Rowan is at Central Davidson tonight. Both South teams are underdogs.

• North Rowan’s boys (16-7, 13-2)  can lock up a share of the Yadkin Valley Confernce title tonight by beating South Davidson (3-17, 2-11).

North Rowan’s girls  (16-7, 12-3) are in second place and will be expected to handle the Wildcats (4-16, 3-10).

• In the South Piedmont,  A.L. Brown is home against Robinson.

• In the Central Piedmont, Davie hosts East Forsyth.

• Host schools for next week’s tournament action are  Lexington (CCC), Carson (NPC), South Davidson (YVC), Reagan (CPC) and Concord (SPC).

Sam Mobley (Catawba) caught a 39-yard touchdown pass for the Houston Roughnecks in a 37-17 win against the Los Angeles Wildcats on Saturday.

Catawba baseball

SALISBURY — Catawba pounded West Virginia State 15-9 and 10-1 at Newman Park on Sunday to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Bryan Ketchie pitched five strong innings, allowing one earned run, in the opener. Ketchie (1-1) exited with an 11-3 lead.

Joe Butts tripled, doubled and drove in four runs. Zack Miller had three hits and scored four runs. Dylan Wilkinson drove in four runs. Henderson Lentz, Luke Spiva and Hunter Shepherd had two hits each. Miller hit his second homer and Shepherd belted his third of the young season.

• Catawba scored seven runs in the third inning of the nightcap.

Shepherd (2-0) pitched four shutout innings and was credited with the win.

Lentz had three hits. Spiva had three RBIs. Wilkinson went 2-for-2. Jeremy Simpson had two RBIs.

Catawba’s scheduled game with Belmont Abbey has been postponed from Tuesday afternoon to 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Catawba hosts Shippensburg in a three-game series this weekend.

Livingstone women

SALISBURY — A cold-shooting Livingstone women’s basketball team was outscored 23-8 in the third quarter and lost to Virginia Union 69-56 on Monday at New Trent Gym.

The teams were tied 24-all after a low-scoring  first half.

Livingstone shot 29 percent from the field and 5-for-27 (18.5 percent) from 3-point range in the CIAA contest.

Virginia Union made 24 turnovers but compensated by shooting 48 percent from the field.

Georgia Campbell led LC with 14 points. Daisa Harris scored  13 for the Blue Bears (11-12, 6-8). Darra Walker had 11, and Adel Allen added 10.

Virginia Union (19-3, 10-2) got 21 points from Jasmine Carter and 17 apiece from Shameka McNeill and Ifunanya Okoye.

College softball

Belmont Abbey’s Mackenzie Sprinkle (East Rowan) and Coastal Carolina’s Mary Sobataka (West Rowan) had hits in their first college at-bats on Saturday.

College basketball

Jamarius Hairston (Carson) is the leading scorer for Davidson County Community College (22-1).

Hairston averages 18.9 points and 5.9 rebounds for the Storm.

College women’s golf

Grace Yatawara (Salisbury) has shot 77-73 (6-over) in the first two rounds of  East Carolina’s tournament in Puerto Rico.

College track

Catawba had  16 personal best performances at the Camel City Invitational indoor meet held in Winston-Salem.

Madison Lowery (South Rowan) and Christina D’Amelio (A.L. Brown) had PBs in the mile.

Akeena Maxwell (A.L. Brown) had a PB in the 200 meters.

Mid. school girls

Corriher-Lipe won 34-6 against Erwin.

Addie Plott scored eight for the Yellow Jackets.  McKenzie Menius and Meredith Faw scored five each.

Savannah Wise and Mia Hawkins had three points each to lead the Eagles.

Local golf

The McCanless Couples competed in a Captains Choice on Sunday.

Harry Owen and Azalee & David Huneycutt took first place.   

Dave Carpenter and Ralph & Pam Carver placed second in a scorecard playoff.

David Huneycutt  had closest to the pin. Longest putt was made by Azalee Huneycutt.
