West/Carson boys

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan’s boys basketball team stayed tied for first place in the North Piedmont Conference with a 77-67 home win against Carson.

Jalen Moss poured in a career-high 35 for the Falcons (13-8, 7-2).

Moss averages 17. His previous high was 28 against Statesville.

Chaz McCombs had 16.

Javon Smith had a career game for Carson (11-12, 4-5) with 26 points. EJ Clark had 22 (10-for-13 on free throws), and AJ Mauldin scored 10.

Carson made only two 3-pointers.

West led by nine at halftime, but Smith’s nine-point third quarter got the Cougars back in it.

West plays at Statesville in a game that will decide the NPC title on Friday.

North boys

SPENCER — Brandon White had 22 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks as North Rowan’s boys rolled to a 92-51 Yadkin Valley Conference win against South Davidson on Tuesday.

Kendrell Goodes had 20  points for the Cavaliers, who had their biggest offensive outburst of the season — by far. Their previous high was 75 points.

North (17-7, 14-2) finished the regular season and will be at least the co-champ in the YVC.

Amir Watkins had a season-high  12 and Zay Davis scored 11 for the Cavaliers. Brandon Jefferson had 10, all in the first quarter as North took a 23-11 lead.

Davis had five steals.

Thomas Ellington scored 21 for the Wildcats (3-18, 2-12). Hayden Smith had 16.

Salisbury boys

SALISBURY —  Salisbury’s boys started fast and took a 12-point lead to the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold off North Davidson on Tuesday in the SHS gym.

North Davidson won 70-68 in overtime and stayed tied for first with Lexington. The Yellow Jackets beat West Davidson.

Tedric Jenkins scored 29 to pace the Black Knights (19-4, 5-2), while Jamarien Dalton had 23.

Salisbury (14-8, 11-6) got 23 points from Zay Kesler, 21 from Cam Stout and 10 from Jacquez Smith.

North Davidson swept the Hornets in two thrillers. The Black Knights won the first meeting, 67-65.

LEXINGTON – South Rowan’s boys lost Tuesday’s Central Carolina Conference game at Central Davidson, 65-49.

South (4-19, 4-13) got four 3-pointers and 18 points from Braden Graham and 11 points from Brenden Finger.

Jacob Myers made five 3-pointers and scored 17 for the Spartans (14-7, 11-6). Owen Schaefer scored 16.

Graham scored eight in the first quarter, as the Raiders took an early lead.

South was down seven at halftime, but Central made five 3-pointers in the third quarter to add to the lead.

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan’s boys lost 67-46 to Statesville in North Piedmont Conference action on Tuesday.

The game was halted with about a minute left because of wet floor conditions.

Dylan Valley led East (2-21, 0-9)  with 15 points. Cameron Padgett scored 10, and Gavin Sprinkle and Vincent Jones had eight each.

Chris Brown scored 16 to lead the Greyhounds (16-5, 7-2), who stayed tied for first with West Rowan. Statesville hosts West on Friday.

Assistant Mark Lambert coached the Mustangs. Trey Ledbetter was out with the flu.

“We played hard and were right there with them for three quarters,” Lambert said. “We ran out of gas in the fourth.”

East expects to have David Jordan back from an injury  when the Mustangs host North Iredell on Senior Night on Friday.

Davie boys

MOCKSVILLE — Zaharee Maddox scored 18 points as Davie’s boys  beat East Forsyth 62-54 in a Central Piedmont Conference game on Tuesday.

Maddox sealed the victory with fast-break buckets and free throws.

James Reid had 12 points  for the War Eagles. Zach Smith had 10 rebounds.

Davie (13-9, 4-5)  closed the first half with a 12-1 run and took the lead for good.

Zyun Reeves scored 17 points and had six blocks to lead the Eagles (5-17, 3-6).

Mi’Keim Moore scored 18 points to lead A.L. Brown’s boys to a 70-68 South Piedmont Conference win against Robinson.

Amari Grier and Ethan McCoy scored 10 for the Wonders (16-6, 6-3), who are in second place. Kheni Briggs, JD Glenn and Dujon Eccles had eight each.

Cox Mill clinched the SPC title on Tuesday by beating Central Cabarrus.

Salisbury girls

SALISBURY — Salisbury’s girls stayed unbeaten in the Central Carolina Conference with a 61-43 Senior Night win against North Davidson on Tuesday.

Kyla Bryant scored 16 points for the Hornets (21-1, 17-0), who are ranked third in 2A in the state’s media poll. Senior Anayia Fulson scored 11, while Jaleiah Gibson had 10.

North Davidson stayed with Salisbury for a quarter, but the Hornets held the Black Knights to four points in the second quarter and took a 31-18 halftime lead.

Emily Hege scored 25 for the third-place Black Knights (16-7, 12-5).

Salisbury has won 13 in a row since a semifinal loss to West Rowan in the Christmas tournament,

East girls

GRANITE QUARRY — Mary Spry scored 16 points for East Rowan’s girls in Tuesday’s 59-40 North Piedmont Conference win against Statesville.

East led by only 24-19 at halftime.

“We started flat, with no energy,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “We’re just fouling too much, and it’s hurting us in trying to  get anything going.”

Senior guard Adalie Harrison scored 13 points and has 998 for her career. She’ll no doubt reach 1,000 when East hosts North Iredell Friday on Senior Night.

Leah Hinceman scored 11 for the Mustangs (18-5, 6-3), who moved into a tie for second place with West Rowan. The Falcons lost to Carson.

Forty fouls were whistled, 20 on each team.

“We’ve got to do better,” Holland said. “But everyone played hard tonight, even when we were not playing well. It’s nice to be at that point where we can not play well  and still find ways to win.”

Ayana Summers scored 12 for the Greyhounds  (5-16, 2-7).

North girls

SPENCER — Kamora Cannie (16 points), Hannah Wilkerson (12), Natavia Taborn (10) and Makiya McDaniel (10) scored in double figures as North Rowan romped 64-23 against South Davidson (4-17, 3-11) in Tuesday’s Yadkin Valley Conference game.

Wilkerson, a sophomore, has scored in double figures 20 times this season.

North started slowly, but a 22-point second quarter gave the Cavaliers a 31-15 lead at halftime.

Then North turned it into a blowout with a 22-2 edge in the third quarter.

North (17-7, 13-3) has secured second place in the YVC behind Gray Stone.

North has topped last season’s win total of 16.

LEXINGTON — Bethany Rymer scored 12 points for South Rowan in a 47-37 Central Carolina Conference loss at Central Davidson on Tuesday.

Mackenzie Chabala scored eight, and Carlie Moore had seven for the Raiders (4-19, 3-14).

Salem Ward led the Spartans (11-10, 9-8) with 12 points.

Rymer scored seven in the first quarter as the Raiders took a slim lead. Central led by one at the half.

The Spartans moved in front with a 16-9 edge in the third quarter.

South Rowan is tied for eighth with Lexington. Eight teams in the 10-team CCC qualify for the league tournament.

South has a tough finish to the regular season. The Raiders host Salisbury on Friday.

MOCKSVILLE — Davie’s girls lost to 63-10 to East Forsyth in a CPC game on Tuesday.

Liz Johnson scored five points to lead the War Eagles.

 

A.L. Brown girls

KANNAPOLIS — A.L. Brown’s girls won against Robinson 65-57 for a South Piedmont Conference victory on Tuesday.

The Wonders (8-14, 4-5) got 29 points from Jaliyah Simmons, 20 from Jala Campbell and 13 from Jaliah Smoutherson.

 

Central Cabarrus girls

CONCORD — The Central Cabarrus girls beat Cox Mill 54-52 to wrap up the South Piedmont Conference title for the third straight season.

Ja’el Miller led the Vikings with 25 points.

Mariah Barrie had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Nya Tillery led the second-place Chargers with 16 points.

 

JV girls hoops

Camden Corley scored 19 points to lead Carson to a 53-26 win against West Rowan on Tuesday.

Makayla Johnson scored 11 for the Cougars. Kaalyn Wynn and Victoria Story stood out on defense.

Brooke Kennerly led the Falcons with 13 points.

 

Mid. school girls

Mooresville defeated Erwin, 34-6.

Mooresville was led by Myonna Butler, Kensley Ford and Elizabeth Jones.

Scorers for Erwin were Cailey Ludwig (4) and Sadie Featherstone (2).

Church league hoops

St. John’s Lutheran won 46-41 against First Presbyterian in the championship game.

  

   

College baseball

Catawba’s Hunter Shepherd was named  South Atlantic Conference  Baseball Player of the Week.

Shepherd, a senior first baseman/pitcher, batted .600 with three homers and earned a win on the mound.

College basketball

Livingstone lost to visiting Virginia Union 95-64 on   Monday at New Trent Gym.

Roger Ray scored 23 for the Blue Bears (12-13, 5-9), who were only down four at halftime.

Lydell Elmore scored 12, and Martel Handley had 11.

Terrell Leach scored 32 for the Panthers (14-10, 7-4).

Jamarius Hairston (Carson) shot 8-for-9 from the field (3-for-3 in 3-pointers) and scored 20 points to lead Davidson County Community College to a 118-68 win against Patrick Henry Community College.

 

College golf

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. —  Catawba placed 11th at the Spring Kick-Off Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament that concluded on Tuesday at  St. Johns Golf and Country Club.

Catawba had the second best round in Tuesday’s final round with a team total of 300.

Tanner Bibey led Catawba as he finished fifth with a 222 total. He shot 1-under 71 on Monday.

The men will host the Richard Rendleman Invitational at the Country Club of Salisbury on March 2-3.

Richmond’s Michael Childress, a Salisbury native, shot 70-76-72 — 218 in the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate.

He tied for 47th.
