Letter: Employers will be drawn to Rowan because of complex

As a longtime resident of Rowan County, I have seen for many years what an important role Rowan-Cabarrus Community College plays in growth, development and success of our county and region. Our award-winning, forward-thinking community college is one of our most valuable resources.

On March 3, I plan to support the 2020 Rowan-Cabarrus Community College bond referendum to ensure our citizens continue to have access to affordable, quality higher education and our county remains a competitive destination for business and industry.

As chair of the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Board of Trustees, I have the privilege of working with a team of leaders dedicated to creating educational and employment opportunities so that our citizens can achieve their goals, support their families and enjoy productive lives. Faculty and staff work hard every day to offer relevant programs leading to degrees, diplomas, certifications and job skills that meet 21st century requirements.

With growing enrollment, the college needs upgraded and expanded facilities to continue meeting today’s workforce needs and prepare students for the jobs of the future. The technology education complex funded by the bond will address a critical need for hands-on training to prepare students for in-demand careers in many fields.

Employers will be drawn to Rowan County by a robust pipeline of skilled workers, leading to an increased tax base and a healthy economy. For example, increasing the number of student welding stations at the college from 29 to nearly 70 will bring an additional $1 million in salaries to the region each year as well-trained graduates enter the workforce.

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College has never been more important to this county than it is today. Personally, I am proud to assist the college in carrying out its mission to change lives and build a better Rowan County. I hope you will join me as I vote “yes” in support of the 2020 Rowan-Cabarrus Community College bond referendum.
