Letter: Highlight students who are participating

My name is Hunter Bell. I’m a teacher at Erwin Middle School. After reading the article titled “ Nearly 1,100 RSS students not participating in e-learning during closure,” I must say, I am very disappointed.
While everything reporter Carl Blankenship wrote was true, well reported and fair, the title of the article made it seem like educators were letting down 1,100 kids.
I can assure you that we are doing everything we can to love and teach our students now more than ever. The reality is, 1,100 students aren’t participating in e-learning. However, roughly 17,000 are.
I recommend that the editor change the title to something along the lines of “Nearly 90% of RSS students participating in virtual classrooms” or something to that regard.
Whether or not the intent of the article was to be negative towards RSS, I’ll never know. But the title was used, in my opinion, to gain clicks, which is very disappointing and disheartening as a teacher in Rowan County.
People hold high expectations for teachers. We do the same for local media.
