Number of currently positive cases decreases by two dozen

SALISBURY — The number of currently positive cases of COVID-19 in the county decreased by 24 on Tuesday as the overall case count grew by seven to 675.

Of the 675 total positive cases, 242 are still positive, 395 have recovered, 11 are being hospitalized and 38 have died, which puts the county near the top in deaths per capita in the state.

Of the total deaths, 21 were from the Citadel and 15 have been from the N.C. State Veterans Home. Two individuals have died who weren’t associated with a congregate care facility. The average age of the deaths is 83.

The total number of positive cases at congregate care facilities remains at 210. A total of 3,691 tests have been conducted.

Statewide, 29,889 cases have been confirmed after 434,921 completed tests. A total of 716 are being hospitalized and 921 have died.

County officials also referenced free assistance from the North Carolina Pro Bono Resource Center to medium and small businesses with COVID-19 legal questions. Qualifying small businesses and nonprofits can be provided a free 45-minute consultation.

In other COVID-19 statistics:

  • The average age for positive individuals is 49.6. Individuals age 65 and older make up the plurality of cases, at 186, and the 51-64 age group is at 115 cases. However, ages 36-50 and 18-35 continue to climb — at 165 and 176 cases, respectively. A total of 33 cases are among children younger than 18 years old.
  • Of the positive cases, 408 individuals are white, 127 are black or African American, three are Asian, one is American Indian/Alaskan Native, 177 are Hispanic, 94 are unknown and 42 are other.
  • Females still make up the majority of positive cases, at 343, while males represent 332 of the positive cases.
  • Zip code 28147, which is where the Citadel nursing home is located, remains the area of the county with the most positive cases, at 290. Next is 28144, a Salisbury zip code, with 180 cases. Zip code 28146, which includes part of Salisbury and a large swath of eastern Rowan, currently has 69 positive cases.
