Golf update: Cress still leads NC Amateur; Lyerly in contention

RALEIGH — Walker Cress (Concord, James Madison) shot 2-under 68 on Friday to go with his first-round 64 and owns a four-shot lead in the North Carolina Amateur Championship.
Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) has shot 70-69 — 139 and is tied for sixth.
The course played tougher on Friday, with golfers dealing with windy conditions as well as tougher pin placements.
There was a rain delay at 5 p.m. Not all groups finished. Michael Childress (Cannon School, Richmond) shot 77 in the first round and was one of the golfers who didn’t finish his round on Friday.
