Salisbury’s doubles team of Millie and Cora Wymbs won the 2A Midwest Regional tennis championship on Monday at Pfeiffer.

The sisters defeated a Forbush duo 6-0, 6-3 in the final.

Salisbury’s Luca Barr finished third in singles, while Meredith Williams placed fourth.

All four Hornets advance to the state tournament.

Salisbury is home today in the second round of the  dual team state playoffs.

West Rowan will play at Piedmont.

HS girls wrestling

East Rowan’s Leah Edwards wrestled at 106 pounds (she was a state champ at 115 last year) in the Defense Soap Super 32 Challenge.

Edwards finished fifth in a field that included many  of the nation’s best and is a Super 32 All-American.

HS football

CONCORD — Carson’s playoff hopes likely ended with a 30-27 South Piedmont Conference loss at Central Cabarrus on Friday.

Carson (3-6, 2-4) entered the game 36th in the 3A RPI rankings.

Carson got two TD passes from Griffin Barber. He hit Jay McGruder and Jackson Earnhardt for scores.

Earnhardt and McGruder also scored on the ground for the Cougars.

In a back-and-forth game, McGruder’s rushing TD gave Carson a 27-22 lead, but Central Cabarrus (3-6, 2-4) got the last score of the night.

The Vikings, who are tied for fifth with Carson and South Rowan, finish at home against Northwest Cabarrus. Carson will play at South Rowan.

MOORESVILLE — Mooresville stayed undefeated with a 30-20 Greater Metro Conference win against A.L. Brown.

Mooresville led 30-7 with about 10 minutes left, but the Wonders got an 83-yard scoring run by Mekhi Herron and a C.J. Gray TD pass to Rhett Hagler to make it closer.

K.J. Boyd’s interception helped spark the Wonder’ late surge.

Mooresville (9-0, 5-0) went up 9-0 before Gray’s touchdown pass to Derick Brazil got the Wonders (4-5, 2-4) back in the game.

Mooresville got a key score with just 20 seconds left in the first half on a 15-yard pass from Brody Norman to Randy Fulmore for a 16-7 halftime lead.

That was one of Norman’s three TD passes.

HS girls golf

Regional action is set for today.

The South Piedmont Conference golfers are at Springdale Resort in Canton. for the 3A West Regional.

Central Carolina Conference golfers are at Cedarbrook for the 1A/2A Regional.

HS volleyball

FRANKLIN — East Rowan’s volleyball team traveled 200 miles for Saturday’s playoff game at Franklin.

The Mustangs didn’t win in the mountains, but they’ll have lifetime memories from the adventure.

East, seeded 29th in the 3A West bracket, had its chances against fourth-seeded Franklin (23-2) in the first set, but Franklin pulled it out 25-23.

The next two sets were easier for the home team. The Tigers put away East 25-12 and 25-17.

Cameron Ostle and Alli Corl had 10 kills each for East (11-13).

Jordan Dry led in digs with 13. Ostle and Jacee Eudy had nine each.

Eudy had 21 assists. Dry and Ostle led the Mustangs in serve-receive.

MAYODAN — McMichael was well-prepared for Salisbury kills leader Ava Morris and beat the Hornets 25-9, 25-13 and 25-13 on Saturday.

Fifth-seeded McMichael (27-6) limited Morris to one kill in the 2A first-round playoff game.

The Hornets, Central Carolina Conference runner-up and winner of 10 conference games, ended a successful season with a 14-11 record.

Kendall Henderson led Salisbury, seeded 28th, with four kills. Carmen McQueen, Addie Myers and Dayami Acevedo had three each.

Sheenya Daugherty had 12 digs for the Hornets. Ashley Yang and Acevedo had 11 each. Morris had nine, and Katie Peeler had six.

Yang had 13 assists.

Lexington, the CCC’s third-place team and tournament runner-up, was swept by West Stanly on Saturday.

CCC champ West Davidson advanced to the second round and will host Owen on Tuesday.

Local golf

Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) tees off at 9:30 a.m. today as the next stage of Q-School qualifying gets under way at Bermuda Run.

Cam Honeycutt shot 77 and even-par 71 in the two rounds of the 7th annual Western Carolina’s Junior Classic held at The Country Club of Salisbury.

He tied for second at 6-over.

Ryan McCoy tied for seventh at 10-over.

Frank Adams  shot 4-over 40 and won the US Kids 9-year-old division at Stonebridge Golf Course in Monroe on Sunday.

The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice event on Sunday.

The team of Lenny Mauseli, Byron Sheesley and Bev & Ty Cobb won.

The second-place team was  Todd Cleary, Clarence Hobart, Allen Terry and Sheryl Johnson.

Mauseli had the longest putt.

Larry Clifton had closest to the pin.

Women’s basketball

Sophomore Bethany Rymer (South Rowan) will play hoops for Columbia International after she finishes the cross country season.

Women’s soccer

Sutton Webb (Salisbury) has played in 11 matches for Mississippi State.

The Bulldogs (10-3-4) had a big win at Alabama on Sunday.

Second-ranked Catawba won its 14th straight match, getting a goal from Hannah Dunn to get past Anderson 1-0.

Women’s volleyball

Tori Hester (West Rowan) is leading Troy on a historic winning streak.

Troy is 10-0 in the Sun Belt Conference.

Troy won against UL Monroe on Saturday with Hester getting 18 kills, 12 digs and two aces.

Catawba lost to Tusculum on Friday and is 6-10 and 4-8 in the South Atlantic Conference.

Kelcie Love (West Rowan) led the Indians in kills with 11, while Riley Hill (East Rowan) led in digs with 12. Kary Hales (Carson) had five digs.
