College women’s basketball: Catawba loses at North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Life on the road is never easy, and Catawba’s third-ranked women’s basketball team took it on the chin on Monday at North Georgia’s Convocation Center.

North Georgia beat the Indians 72-57.

North Georgia (5-1) went up by 13 points after a quarter. Catawba (3-1) fought back to a 36-33 deficit at halftime, but North Georgia held on in the second half.

Catawba almost always wins the turnover battle, but this time the Indians lost it 24-16.

The foul line numbers were brutal. Catawba shot only eight free throws, while North Georgia went 23-for-29 at the charity stripe.

Emily Trushel scored 21 for North Georgia.

Lyrik Thorne had 16 points and five assists for Catawba. Janiya Downs had 13 points. Sara McIntosh scored 10.

Catawba’s most effective player was reserve post Mary Spry, who had eight points on perfect shooting and had five rebounds in 10 minutes.
