MOUNT ULLA — A motorist was trapped inside their car under a building after being struck by another vehicle that reportedly ran a stop sign, according to a trooper with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The driver of the original car, a black BMW, was trapped under the building after his car ran off the road, over train tracks and into an abandoned building on the other side of the tracks around 12:30 p.m. on Monday. The driver was able to be rescued from the vehicle around 30 minutes later by rescuers with Rowan Rescue and Salisbury and Kannapolis fire departments. The trooper said that the man was transported to the hospital, but was alert and did not seem to be suffering from any serious injuries.

The driver of a blue Toyota was heading north on Graham Road when they allegedly ran the stop sign at the intersection of N.C. Highway 801 and collided into the side of the BMW, according to the trooper. The BMW then ran off the road and crashed into the side of the abandoned building, causing the building’s supports to collapse onto the car. After the driver was rescued, a tow truck had to tie a line to the BMW and pull it out from under the building.

Both the driver and the passenger of the Toyota only suffered minor injuries and did not require medical attention or transportation.

West Rowan Volunteer Fire Department was the first to respond. Cleveland and Locke fire departments also assisted with the wreck.
