SALISBURY — A man was found dead after being reported missing on Friday when deputies found him laying between two buildings after apparently falling off one.

Deputies responded to a property in the 600 block of Eastway Lane around 7 p.m. in reference to a missing person, according to a spokesperson for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. The caller had advised deputies that the property was owned by an elderly man, identified as 76-year-old Joseph Scott Shaver, and that he had observed the owner’s car present around 4 p.m. that day with the door to a nearby building left open. According to the spokesperson, the caller did not call at this point because that was a regular occurrence, but they became concerned when they noticed the car still there and the door still open around 6:30 p.m. the same day.

The caller and some of their family members began to search the nearby fields, and called 911 after they did not find Shaver within 30 minutes. Deputies then went to Shaver’s residence but did not locate him there. Rowan County Search and Rescue then went to Shaver’s vehicle along with K-9 unites and performed a search of the area.

Shaver was found dead between two buildings on the property. On further investigation, the spokesperson said that it appeared that he had fallen off of the roof of one of buildings. The caller advised deputies that he had seen Shaver on the roof many times.
