From staff reports

The Rowan County Championships for boys and girls wrestling will be held on Saturday at East, with action starting at 9 a.m.

The boys began holding a tournament that included all of the county’s teams during the 1987-88 season.

Every school has won the event. South leads with 13 championships. Next are West (7), East (6), North (3), Salisbury (3) and Carson (2).

West has won five straight county championships. COVID canceled the meet in 2020-21. West’s boys are very strong again.

Carson was the last team other than West to win the county tournament. The Cougars prevailed in the 2016-17 season.

Salisbury has had the longest drought. The Hornets haven’t won since the 2000-01 season.

The boys will compete in  14 weight classes, while  girls competition will be in 12.

The girls will be wrestling for a team championship for the first time.

The plan is to alternate boys championship matches with girls championship matches.
