College women’s basketball: Catawba pummels Pacers

SALISBURY — The sixth-ranked Catawba women’s basketball team pulled away from USC Aiken in the second half and took an 83-60 victory.
Janiya Downs was terrific in the Saturday afternoon non-conference matchup. The former South Rowan star had an efficient 20-point effort, with only nine shot attempts. She made two 3-pointers and was 8-for-8 at the foul line.
Sara McIntosh had 15 points, while Lyrik Thorne added 14.
Six players off the bench combined for 22 points.
Catawba (7-1) took care of the ball and had an 18-10 edge in the turnover battle. The Indians shot a respectable 40.3 percent from the field, made six 3-pointers and battled evenly on the glass.
Marta Rivera scored 20 for the Pacers (3-5).
Catawba plays Tuesday afternoon at home against UNC Pembroke.
