GRANITE QUARRY — Christiana Lutheran Church in Granite Quarry is the setting every Tuesday for a veterans social and lunch with speakers and information shared at each gathering. This week, the event was extra special with approximately 185 guests in attendance, the largest that many said they could remember, and with many additional events taking place during the social.
F&M Bank sponsored the event and provided both lunch and some giveaways for ticket holders whose numbers were pulled.
Troy Horton served as the emcee for the social, welcoming everyone and providing announcements.
One special event on the menu was the awarding of community service awards to three individuals, John Brindle, Thelma Brown and Cecil Whitley, thanking them for all they have done for the organization.
Plaques were presented to the recipients by Frontier Coffee Shop for 2023, and each was engraved with their name and time of service.
Brindle, who serves as the register of deeds, was honored for all he has done for the veterans.
Brown, who helped to get the veterans group organized, is a United States Army veteran, was and served 21 years with the 846 Transportation in Desert Storm and Desert Shield.
Whitley, an attorney in Salisbury, a United States Army veteran, was a first lieutenant and served in the 1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam from 1969-1970. He was honored for all he has done.
