Preview: Salisbury City Council to honor David Whisenant for his decades-long news career

SALISBURY — During its upcoming meeting, the Salisbury City Council will honor WBTV reporter David Whisenant for his career in news, radio and his “dedicated service to the community.”

The meeting will be on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at the city hall building at 6 p.m. Here are the agenda items that will be discussed:

  • Council will recognize the communications team for awards received from the Public Relations Society of America – Charlotte Chapter.
  • Mayor Karen Alexander will make the following observances: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day for Jan. 15, 2024; National Mentoring Month for Jan. 2024; and National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month for Jan. 2024.
  • Council to receive public comment. Anyone who wishes to speak by Zoom must sign up before 5 p.m. by contacting Connie Snyder at csnyd@salisburync.gov. Residents who wish to speak in person can sign up in council chambers. Anyone who is unable to speak during the meeting may submit written comments to the email above and they will be shared with council.
  • City Planner Emily Vanek will ask council to consider adopting an ordinance designating the “Murdoch-Wiley House” located at 203 West Bank Street as a local historic landmark. A public hearing will be held regarding this matter.
  • Vanek will ask council to consider adopting an ordinance designating the “Andrew Murphy House” located at 229 West Bank Street as a local historic landmark. A public hearing will be held regarding this matter.
  • Transportation Director Wendy Brindle will ask for authorization for City Manager Jim Greene to execute a contract with Summit Design and Engineering Services, PLLC, in the amount of $222,090.20 for the design of safety improvements on Brenner Avenue.
  • Administrative Services Director Kelly Baker will ask council to consider approving a contract with Checkmate Government Relations for state lobbying services.
  • Council will consider council liaison appointments to the following community groups for 2023-2025: ABC Board, Bell Tower Green Committee, Centralina Council of Governments, Centralina Council of Governments-Alternate, Community Appearance Commission, Downtown Salisbury, Inc., Economic Development Commission, Fireman’s Relief Fund, Housing Advocacy Commission, Human Relations Commission, Metropolitan Planning Organization, Metropolitan Planning Organization-Alternate, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Public Art Commission, Rowan County Tourism Development Authority, Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency, Transportation Advisory Board, Tree Board, and Youth Council.
