Conditions could bring snowfall to area next weekend

ROWAN COUNTY — Rowan County’s two-year snowless streak could come to an end later this week if forecasts hold up.
Rowan County Weather, an online weather service, indicated that conditions during the upcoming weekend could result in the first measurable snowfall that the area has seen in two years.
Rowan County Weather’s chief forecaster, Steve Monday, said in an email on Sunday that it would likely not be much snowfall, at least at the moment.
“Low pressure will make its way through the Ohio Valley during the weekend bringing moisture from the Gulf of Mexico along with it,” Monday said. “The timing of the low along with the moisture will be key as the temperatures at ground level will need to be cold enough for the snow to meet the ground.”
Monday went on to say that most of the snow, at that point, will likely fall as rain before transitioning over to all snow, resulting in “likely a dusting to a tenth of an inch.”
Monday added that there is still plenty of time for things to change to an all-rain event or the potential for higher snowfall accumulation totals.
Those in Rowan County wishing to rise for a wintry morning have had those wishes dashed in recent years.
“Over the past few years, the timing for snowfall has been off with all of the ingredients needed to allow for measurable snowfall to reach the ground,” Monday said.
Those conditions can be anything from temperatures being too warm at the time when moisture arrives or plenty of cold air but no moisture.
Anyone who is hoping for some snow, should at least temper expectations. Measurable snowfall can be as little as one-tenth of an inch of snow on the ground.
Updates on the possibility of any severe weather will continue throughout the week.
