College basketball: Thorne leads Catawba women to routine win

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Lyrik Thorne scored 20 efficient points as Catawba’s fourth-ranked women’s basketball team beat Coker 84-72 on Wednesday at the DeLoach Center.

Thorne, a grad student using the COVID redshirt year to play a fifth season, has moved up to third on Catawba’s all-time scoring list with 1,768 points. She’ll soon breeze past Danyel Locklear’s program record of 1,838 points.

Janiya Downs (South Rowan) and Jada Porter added 15 points each for the Indians (9-1, 4-0).

Catawba shot 47 percent and made seven 3-pointers, while holding Coker to 34-percent shooting.

Catawba led by as many as 23 points in the second half, and a lot of players got a lot of minutes.

Catawba plays at Emory & Henry on Saturday.
