HARTSVILLE, S.C. — Can your really win a South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball game while shooting 0-for-14 on 3-pointers?
The answer is yes.
The Catawba Indians accomplished that remarkable feat, taking a 92-89 win at Coker on Wednesday despite a woeful night with the 3-ball.
Catawba Sports Information reported it’s the first game since 2014 in which the Indians failed to make a single 3-pointer.
Basically, Justin Banks saved the Indians. He came off the bench to rack up 21 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
Javeon Jones (17), DeAngelo Epps (14), Peyton Gerald (11) and Kris Robinson (10) also impacted the scoring column, and five more teammates chipped in.
While Catawba couldn’t buy a 3, it did make 2-point field goals at a 53-percent clip. Catawba won the turnover battle 22-14, and that helped.
Catawba (6-1, 4-0) was down seven points with eight minutes left, but got things turned around.
Banks dunked with 4:48 remaining, a hoop that put the Indians ahead 82-81, and they kept the lead the rest of the way.
Kris Robinson made two free throws for the Indians with three seconds left for a three-point lead, and the Indians survived Coker’s 3-point attempt at the end.
Demar Anderson scored 22, while Glenn Bynum had 20 for the Cobras (6-6, 2-3).
Catawba travels again on Saturday, heading to Virginia to take on Emory & Henry at 2 p.m.
