High school girls basketball roundup: Mustangs, Raiders, Hornets roll

MISENHEIMER — East Rowan’s girls never trailed and took a 40-28 non-conference win at Gray Stone.

The game was tied at 2-all and 4-all, but a corner 3-pointer by Lily Kluttz put the Mustangs ahead to stay, and Mary Church powered in a layup as she was fouled a few moments later.

Kluttz hit another 3-pointer to provide a 15-7 lead after a quarter.

East led 24-11 at the half and was able to do enough in the second half to maintain a lead and get the road victory.

Church, who played for Gray Stone as a freshman, scored eight. Kluttz finished with six. Kady Collins, who opened the scoring with a layup, also had six.

East (6-5) plays at Northwest Cabarrus on Friday.

Gray Stone is 5-5.

MOUNT PLEASANT — South Rowan’s girls went 0-for-December, but it’s a new month and a new year and they began 2024 on a positive note with a 44-28 win at Mount Pleasant.

It was the first victory for the Raiders (2-8) since they blew out South Stanly on Nov. 28. The Raiders were back at full strength for the first time in a while, and it showed.

The first quarter was a struggle, but South used an 18-point second quarter to take a 25-16 halftime lead.

South shut down Mount Pleasant (6-6) down the stretch. The Tigers scored only three points in the fourth quarter.

Kynlee Dextraze led South with 11 points. Day Pharr scored seven. There were a lot of 4s and 5s in the scorebook, as nine Raiders scored.

Maci Harwood scored 16 for Mount Pleasant.

SALISBURY — Torese Evans and Mariana Zapata posted career highs as Salisbury’s girls crushed South Davidson 69-22 for a Central Carolina Conference win.

Zapata’s previous career best was nine points. She scored 13. Evans’ previous high was 11. She scored 12.

The usual leading scorers for Salisbury — MaKayla Noble and Jamyrah Cherry — also did their share in reduced minutes. Noble got 14, while Cherry had 13.

Salisbury (8-4, 3-0) led 18-0 right away and was ahead 25-1 after a quarter. The Hornets breezed from there.

South Davidson is 1-12 and 0-3 in the CCC.

Salisbury plays at East Davidson Friday.

KANNAPOLIS — Hickory Ridge was too strong for A.L. Brown and rolled 76-34 in a Greater Metro 4 Conference season opener.

Hickory Ridge (11-2, 1-0) led 20-5 after a quarter.

Amya Leathers scored 22 points. Sheree Gidney, a Catawba commit, scored 16.

Sadie Faulkner led the Wonders (8-3, 0-1) with nine points.

It’s a tough stretch for the Wonders. They’ll travel to Lake Norman on Friday.

CONCORD — Northwest Cabarrus beat Central Cabarrus 55-35 in a matchup of two of the South Piedmont Conference’s upper-tier teams.

Re’Ale Walton scored 22 for the Trojans (8-3, 4-1), while Mackenzie Ortscheid had 12, including the 3-pointer that provided a 29-20 halftime lead.

Kyra Lewis scored 15 for the Vikings (6-5, 3-1).
