SALISBURY — A man was assaulted after police say he attempted to perform a “citizen’s arrest” on a juvenile who sold him a fake iPhone.

The man bought a used iPhone from a juvenile on Facebook, according to a Rowan County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. When the man received the phone and turned it on, he recognized it as a fake because it used an Android operating system. According to the spokesperson, the man never alerted the police about the fraud. The man then reportedly told the juvenile that he wished to buy another phone from him and that they should meet at Charlie’s Mart on Faith Road on Wednesday.

When the juvenile arrived, the man allegedly used a broken baseball bat to threaten the juvenile in an attempt to perform what he called a “citizen’s arrest.”

He allegedly forced the juvenile to the ground, at which point, another juvenile jumped out of a car and hit the man in the head with a metal pipe.

Deputies responded to the location in reference to a fight in progress at 5:45 p.m. Emergency medical personnel treated the victim on scene for a head injury, but he refused transport to the hospital, the spokesperson said.

Deputies later located the juveniles and spoke with them and the parents of at least one of the juveniles. The spokesperson said that no criminal charges or juvenile petitions have been filed yet, as the incident is still under investigation.
