College women’s basketball: Catawba survives road trip, 5-0 in SAC

EMORY, Va. — Out-shot and out-rebounded at Emory & Henry’s King Center on Saturday afternoon, Catawba’s women’s basketball team still managed to win another South Atlantic Conference game.
Catawba survived 77-73, with Saniya Wilson and Janiya Foskey combining for 18 huge points off the bench.
The critical stat for the fourth-ranked Indians was turnovers. They won that battle 29-13. That enabled them to get up a lot more shots than the Wasps (7-7, 2-4).
The Wasps were deadly when they did get shots. They shot 50 percent on 3-pointers.
Emory & Henry led by as many as nine points in the first half and still led the Indians, who made a long trip, by four at the break.
Catawba (10-1, 5-0) took the lead in the third quarter, but Emory & Henry wouldn’t go away.
Lyrik Thorne made a 3-pointer for a six-point Catawba lead with about three minutes left, but the Wasps rallied again.
Sara McIntosh made two free throws for Catawba with 17 seconds left for a 74-71 lead. Thorne had a steal and split two free throws for 75-71.
Thorne made two more free throws at the end for the final four-point margin.
Thorne made five 3-pointers, scored 27 points and have five assists. Janiya Downs (South Rowan) made four 3-pointers and scored 18.
Catawba launched 35 3-pointers and made 10.
Breanna Yarber scored 22 for the Wasps.
The Indians are tied for first in the SAC with Lincoln Memorial and will play at Wingate on Wednesday.
