Staff report
CONCORD — West Rowan’s 80-28 win against the Central Cabarrus girls on Friday was par for the course, a slightly better than average night.
The Falcons, who average 76.7 points per game, did a little better than that, thanks mostly to a late flurry by De’Mya Phifer, who is closing in on 1,000 points and had three buckets at the end faster than you can change channels.
Defensively, the Falcons (10-1, 5-0) did a little better than their average, as well. They’re allowing 31.5 points per game.
West didn’t have an under-the-weather Makaylah Tenor, who is a really good player, but that just meant more minutes for Tenor’s colleagues.
West put the whole starting five in double figures.
Phifer scored 18, bumping her career total to 987. Lauren Arnold, who accounted for a dozen points in a wild, second-quarter flurry that buried the Vikings, finished with 17. Tiara Thompson made several entertaining shots with a high degree of difficulty for 16. Mya Edwards, who got six early, scored 14. Emma Clarke had an efficient 13. She showed some range and didn’t miss often.
West took charge shortly after the opening tip. Thompson made it 9-0 with a three-point play.
It was 20-3 before Central (6-6, 3-2) closed the first quarter with a 6-0 spree that must have aggravated Arnold.
Arnold had a personal run of steals and layups in the second quarter as West pushed its lead to 41-14 at the half.
Phifer and Thompson made 3-pointers in the third quarter as the lead swelled to 61-24.
West crossed into running-clock territory — a 40-point lead — at 68-28.
The Falcons finished the game on a 15-0 run.
Jahnae Duncan led the Vikings with nine points. Kyra Lewis had eight.
Tuesday’s game should be one of the best of the season, as Robinson (9-2, 5-0) and the talented Hobbs sisters come to Mount Ulla.
