Area Sports Briefs: Hornets strong in indoor track

The Salisbury Hornets indoor track team competed in the Walter Bass High School Invitational with nationally ranked athletes from all over the country.

Salisbury set 12 personal records, had four top-five finishes and three top-1o finishes.

Jamal Rule placed second in the 500 meters in 1:06.77. He’s the fastest in 1A/2A in the event.

Salisbury’s 4×400 team of Millie Wymbs, Cora Wymbs, Maddie Crabb and Christyonna Lewis is ranked No. 1 in 1A/2A. They ran 4:15.43 in the Walter Bass Invitational.

Salisbury’s 4×200 team of the Wymbs sisters, Lewis and Tai’lah Ward is ranked third in 1A/2A and ran 1:46.53.

Ward and Lewis are in the top three in 1A/2A in the 300.

Millie Wymbs in third in 1A/2A in the 500.

Salisbury is second in 1A/2A in the boys 4×800.

 

HS football

Salisbury defensive end Jaden Warren and running back Jamal Rule made High School OT second team All-State.

HS wrestling

West Rowan’s undefeated girls wrestling team (11-0) beat North Rowan 54-6 on Senior Night.

East Rowan junior Leah Edwards is included in the USA High School National Rankings List.

She’s ranked 24th at 115 pounds.

 

HS hoops

The strong Oak Ride Military Academy team (23-3) cruised to a 70-52 win against the North Hills boys.

Champ Hayden scored 24 points on 7-for-26 shooting. Hayden was 10-for-11 on free throws.

Jerrod Drye scored 18 points. Malachi Strong had eight points and 14 rebounds for North Hills (12-8).

Michael Strickland, former North Rowan Cavalier, had 17 points and four assists for Lab Prep Academy in Saturday’s game against Chosen 1 Academy.

 

College basketball

Caleb Mauldin (West Rowan) started for Mars Hill and had 12 points and four rebounds in Saturday’s 100-83 loss to Wingate.

Mauldin earned the start by scoring eight points in four minutes against Coker.

Wingate’s Emily Hege, who starred for North Davidson, is the South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

The sophomore averaged 21 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

 

Faith Academy

In the American Renaissance Charter School MLK Middle School Tournament, Faith Academy’s boys basketball team won 38-28 against Iredell Charter in a semifinal.

The Faith Academy Patriots won 48-37 against Sacred Heart in the championship game.

Salisbury Academy

The Salisbury Academy varsity girls basketball team beat Tabernacle Christian School 46-8 to start conference play.

Salisbury Academy took control of the game from the opening tip. Leading scorers were Audrey Faggart, Anna Kate Goodman, and Georgia Heilig with six points each.  SA is at home today at 4 p.m. against Concordia Lutheran School.

The Salisbury Academy varsity boys basketball team rolled 51-27 against Tabernacle Christian School.

The Jaguars jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Leading scorers were Ryan McCoy with 21 points, James Brincefield with 10 points and Lucas Webb with six points. The Jaguars host Concordia Lutheran at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
