College women’s basketball: LC hangs on to win thriller

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Livingstone’s women’s basketball team produced an explosive, 28-point third quarter and held on to beat Lane College 74-73 on Monday.

The early game played in front of 125 fans was part of of the HBCU MLK Day Unity Invitational at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in downtown Greenville.

Livingstone (3-7) was able to overcome 28 turnovers by shooting 48.2 percent, making seven 3-pointers and controlling the boards.

Morgan Kelson had 15 points and nine rebounds. Andresia Alexander scored 12, and the Blue Bears got scoring from 13 different players.

Jay’la Williams and Ny’Asia Green made key shots in the fourth quarter.

Lane College, from Jackson, Tenn., put four in double figures and shot 45.9 percent. The Dragons (5-9) smashed the Blue Bears 23-9 in the second quarter to take a 42-28 halftime lead.

Livingstone responded in the third quarter, dominating for 10 minutes and taking a 56-54 lead.

Williams made two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, including one with 6:08 remaining that broke a tie and put Livingstone ahead to stay.

Green made a 3-pointer for an eight-point lead with 2:14 left, and the Blue Bears dodged a last-second shot by Lane to secure the win.
