GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan’s baseball team spotted West Rowan two early runs but came back to win 3-2 in a big early South Piedmont Conference game.

Maddox Moore and Cole Blevins scored for West (1-2, 0-2) in the top of the first.

Harrison Ailshie (2-0) entered the game in the second inning and shut out the Falcons the rest of the way. He struck out nine, walked one and allowed three hits.

West’s Corbin Bailey shut out the Mustangs (3-0, 3-0) for four innings, but East tied the game in the fifth against Bailey and Drew Burton.

East scored the decisive run in the sixth on a sac fly by Nate Hayworth.

Logan Dyer had three of East’s five hits.

Burton had two of West’s three hits.

CHINA GROVE — Kendal Sifford pitched a complete game as Carson pounded Central Cabarrus 11-1 in five innings to stay undefeated.

Corbin Hales drove in three runs for the Cougars (3-0, 3-0).

Hales, Jayven Parks, Caden Lewis and Cam Williamson had two hits each. Keegan Barger had a hit, two walks and two steals and scored twice. Lewis’ double was the only extra-base hit for the Cougars.

Nick Ayash had the walk-off hit for the 10-run rule in the fifth.

LANDIS — South Rowan lost a tough one on Tuesday, falling to Robinson 2-1 in nine innings.

Marshal Faw pitched six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts. He went 2-for-2 with two walks at the plate and stole two bases.

 

High school basketball

West Rowan sharpshooter Will Givens announced a commitment to Johnson & Wales on Wednesday.

 

High school softball

Carson pitcher Caylee Snow struck out 15 in a 5-1 win against Concord.

She pitched a complete game, allowing four hits.

 

High school football

West Rowan defensive back Aubree Robinson, Rowan County Special Teams Player of the Year, announced a commitment to Catawba.

 

Local golf

GARS members played a Captain’s Choice tournament at Corbin Hills, with teams picked by a computer.

The first-place team at minus-8 was John Struzick, Jesse King, Joe Dunn and Larry Luther.

The second-place team with a minus-6 was Dickie Peeler, Linn Safley, Paul Day Sr. and John Mitchell. They won a scorecard playoff with the team of Keith Mason, Thomas Dodge, Randy Lipe, John Daniels and  the team of Ken Anderson, Wayne Kluttz, Jim Brown and Paul Rogers.

Peeler won closest to the pin on the No. 2 hole. King made the longest putt on No. 9.

Michael Van Hecke won closest to the pin on No. 5, while David Scearce won closest to the pin on No. 13 and No. 16.

The team of Peeler, Safley, Day Sr. and Mitchell eagled the par-5 No. 6 hole.

Great weather on Sunday led to a bunch of golfers in a McCanless Couples Captain’s Choice event.

The first-place team was Don Terzi, Jim Oliver and Bev & Ty Cobb.

The second-place team was Clarence Hobart, Claude Honeycutt, Tim Vanhoy and Susan Wydner

North Carolina A&T’s freshman second baseman JT Taylor will miss the rest of the season with a wrist injury.

College softball

Whitley Arnott (West Rowan) had a brilliant relief outing recently to get her first win of the season for East Tennessee State. She got out of a jam in the seventh and struck out the side in the eighth.
