SALISBURY — Two people were arrested after a car was stopped in the Love’s Travel Stop parking lot. The incident resulted in a confusing scene, including the car crashing because it was not put in park and trooper’s shoulder being dislocated during an arrest.
The incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on Tuesday, when a deputy saw a black Ford SUV and noticed that he could not see anyone in the vehicle. The deputy followed the Ford to the Peeler Road exit, during which time he ran the license plate and discovered the tag was registered to a Nissan Altima, according to a spokesperson for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. He also reportedly noticed the Ford switch lanes and slam on the brakes multiple times.
The deputy then reportedly followed the car into the Love’s parking lot, where he turned on his lights and sirens behind the car when it parked. The Ford then backed out of the spot and drove around the parking lot, eventually stopping in front of the door, according to the spokesperson.
When the car stopped, two people, a male and female, allegedly got out of the passenger side and attempted to rush into the store.
The deputy attempted to stop both from leaving the scene. While he escorted the male to the back of the Ford, the woman rushed inside the store, the spokesperson said. During the confusion, the driver exited the vehicle, allegedly failing to put it in park. While the driver walked to the back of the car, it rolled forward and crashed into a parked vehicle.
A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper arrived on scene at some point to assist. The trooper and deputy continued to attempt and fail to get everyone to stay still, at which point they began to detain everyone due to being outnumbered. The trooper attempted to detain a fourth person that was in the Ford, who allegedly continuously attempted to pull away, so the trooper forced him to the ground to detain him. At some point during the altercation, the trooper’s shoulder became dislocated, the spokesperson said.
Eventually, law enforcement was able to detain everyone. A K9 unit was called and positively alerted on the car, but a search revealed no narcotics in the vehicle.
The driver, identified as 40-year-old Lindsay Marie Klein, was arrested and charged with driving while her license was revoked, displaying a fictitious tag or license plate, reckless driving and driving without insurance. Klein was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center and given a $10,000 bond.
The man the trooper dislocated his shoulder detaining, identified as 34-year-old Antonio Lovo, was arrested and charged with resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer and injury to personal property. Lovo was also placed in the detention center and given a $10,000 bond.
