SALISBURY — When ground was broken for the Rowan Vocational Opportunities, Inc., warehouse expansion, consumers, staff and administrators were elated.
The 17,000-square-foot addition became necessary as the company has acquired more work and customer demand has increased.
“Maintaining excellent quality and timely shipping and receiving is essential for our successful operation,” Executive Director Gary Yelton said. “As the construction has progressed, the cost of land, materials, and labor have been on the rise in recent years. Although the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused a shift in the economy, we have been fortunate to have room for expanding. We have been able to sustain and increase our collaborative efforts with area businesses and partners which has been a major asset to us.
Upon examination of inventory distribution and storage space, as well as shipping and receiving access, Rowan Vocational Opportunities administrators determined it is of significant importance to ensure warehouse tasks are completed on time without compromising safety, accuracy and quality productivity. Expanding the warehouse allows the company to store more products, manage stock better and meet customers’ needs more easily, which prevents shortages and shortens lead times and turnaround.
Safety is also a key element when working with individuals with developmental, emotional, and physical impairments. Additional space will allow them to operate more effectively and efficiently as they strike a balance between stock levels and customer requirement. This will also help save money, time and reduce waste. The expansion will feature a handicap ramp with safety railings along with additional space to move fork lifts in and out of the warehouse.
Cut-Rite Builders is also completing additional bays for pickup and delivery of products which will make the warehouse more accessible. The foundation has been completed as well as the firewall. With the addition, it has changed the area where consumers arrive and depart. A new cover has been added as well to prevent consumers from having to stand in bad weather.
“The agency’s fundraising campaign is continuing to gain momentum, and I would like to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to all our donors, supporters and vendors for their efforts on our behalf,” Yelton said.
Shredding operations continue to be available with pickup and drop-off services at the Salisbury location.
