Staff report
All-conference teams for winter sports (boys basketball, girls basketball, boys swimming, girls swimming, boys wrestling, girls wrestling) are sent by leagues to the media shortly after the last winter sport ends.
South Piedmont Conference winter sports concluded last week when West Rowan’s girls and Central Cabarrus’ boys won basketball state championship games. Central Carolina Conference winter sports ended a few days earlier with a loss in the regional final by Salisbury’s boys basketball team.
Basketball all-conference is determined by a vote of league coaches. One thing to keep in mind regarding all-conference voting is that it normally takes place in that small window between the end of the regular season and the start of the conference tournament. How teams fare in the playoffs is not a factor because the voting already has been done.
Wrestling and swimming all-conference teams are determined by performance in the conference meet/tournament. Some leagues recognize only individual champions. Some recognize runners-up as well as champions.
None of the area leagues name an all-conference team for indoor track.
Thanks go out to Danny Palmer (CCC) and Sandy Torrence (SPC and GMC) for sending all-conference teams and award winners to the Post.
Spring sports are well under way. When the last sport ends involving one of their conference teams, the leagues will make the all-conference teams for baseball, softball, girls soccer, boys and girls track and field, boys tennis and boys golf available to the media.
