Area Sports Briefs: Falcons lose tight softball game; A.L. Brown lineman commits to Auburn

SOFTBALL
MOORESVILLE — In a softball game moved to Mooresville due to field conditions at West Rowan on Saturday, the Blue Devils beat West Rowan 2-1.
Mooreville’s lefty pitcher Campbell Schaen, who led Rowan Little League to a World Series championship in 2019, struck out 12 and pitched a one-hitter.
West’s only hit was a home run by Emma Clarke in the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-all.
Mooresville won the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out hit by Kami Bodine.
Arabelle Shulenberger pitched a strong game for the Falcons. She struck out eight, while allowing four hits and two walks.

FOOTBALL
A.L. Brown junior offensive lineman Tai Buster, a 3-star recruit, announced a commitment to Auburn.
Buster (6-foot-5, 260) also had offers from Florida, Penn State and Rutgers, among others.

Salisbury senior linebacker DJ Adams (5-11, 192) announced a commitment to NC Wesleyan.

BASEBALL
KANNAPOLIS — A.L. Brown lost 2-0 to Lake Norman in a Greater Metro Conference game played on Thursday.
It was a scoreless game until Lake Norman scored in the sixth.
CJ Gray limited the Wildcats (7-4, 3-1) to one hit. He struck out eight.
Maddox Langley got A.L. Brown’s only hit.
Caden Beaver shut down the Wonders (3-5, 0-4) and struck out eight. Austin Lockamy pitched the seventh and earned a save.

West Rowan two-way player Drew Burton announced a commitment to Wake Tech.

BOYS TENNIS
SALISBURY — Salisbury breezed to an 8-0 win against North Rowan on Friday in Central Carolina Conference tennis.
AJ Jarrell, Gray Davis, Bryant Davis, Reid Hlavacek, Soyer Cornelison and Ben Lawson were singles winners for the Hornets (7-0, 5-0).
Jarrell/Bryant Davis and Cornelison/Hlavacek won doubles matches against the Cavaliers (0-5, 0-5).
No. 3 doubles wasn’t contested.
Salisbury has an unusual tennis doubleheader scheduled for Monday, as the Hornets will play both of the scheduled CCC games against Thomasville.

CONCORD — East Rowan rolled to an 8-1 South Piedmont Conference win at Robinson (1-7, 1-5) on Thursday.
Owen Kesler, Blake Mathews, Thomas Stokes, Preston Stephens, Will Kesler and Josh Gardner won in singles for the Mustangs (5-1, 5-1).
Gardner had to make a big comeback at No. 6. He won the second set and then a tiebreaker to decide the match.
Owen Kesler/Mathews and Stokes/Stephens were winning doubles teams.

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan won 8-1 in Thursday’s SPC match with South Rowan.
Dylan Parrish, Sam Gulledge, Jakobe Gardner, Callen Batts and Isaiah Wood won singles matches for the Falcons (2-5, 2-5).
Sawyer Basinger won for the Raiders (0-8, 0-7) at No. 2 singles.
Parrish/Max Brown won at No. 1 doubles, while Gulledge/Wood won at No. 2.

CONCORD — Will Welch won at No. 3 singles for Carson in a 6-3 SPC loss to Northwest Cabarrus.
Karson Sloop lost a tight match at No. 2 singles.
Austin Atwell/Sloop and Griffen Bowman/Welch were winning doubles teams for the Cougars (3-4, 3-4).

North Rowan held a signing celebration for Bailee Goodlett on Monday. She signed with the Catawba Indians.

GIRLS SOCCER
GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan won 10-0 against North Rowan (0-6) on Friday in a non-conference match.
Lillia Jeffers scored four goals for the Mustangs (3-6). LeAnna Rojas scored three.
Kailin Bomely, Arden Miller and Jaelyn Myer scored a goal each.

A.L. Brown was declared Rowan Cup champion after winning against South Rowan in a PK shootout. The teams tied 1-all.
BOYS SOCCER
Desmond Bullard, a 6-foot-4 forward who led Gray Stone to the 1A state championship in the fall, has been named to play in this summer’s East-West All-Star Game.
MOORESVILLE — North Hills Christian School competed in its first track meet at Woodlawn School recently, as the athletic department continues to grow.
Seven schools participated.
Malachi Strong led the Eagles. He won the 100 and 400 dashes and placed second in the 200.
Jerrod Drye finished third in the long jump, fifth in the 200 and sixth in the 100.
In the girls competition, Elise Budzisch was fourth in the 1600, while Carmen Jones was fifth in the 1600.
The North Hills coaches are Speedy Smith and Michelle Droddy.
