SALISBURY — The community came out in force to support career development for Overton Elementary School scholars during the school’s annual Career Day event this week.

Representatives from Salisbury police and fire departments, Rowan County EMS and Animal Control, Livingstone College, Catawba College, the Salisbury Post, the Fun Factory, the Center for Faith and the Arts, Life Church volunteers, and Salisbury High School’s CTE program shared information about 14 different career paths with kindergarten through fifth grade scholars.

School Counselor Rosemary Wood explained that she and other event organizers Tory Curran, school social worker; Jasmine Brooks, CIS student support specialist; and Kelly Bucy, Overton PTA officer, worked diligently to invite speakers who worked in areas of interest expressed by their scholars.

Fifth graders had a special opportunity to learn from Salisbury High School’s Demeka Kelly and her CTE students and try their hand at a few skills the older students are learning in their nursing fundamentals classes. Animal Control Officer Eric Williams wowed the younger scholars with his stories of animal rescue and by allowing the scholars to touch his co-presenter, Banana the ball python.

The highlight of the event occurred when Mayor Karen Alexander who participated as a Career Day Speaker herself, sharing her experience as both mayor and architect, presented the school with her official Career Day proclamation in recognition of “the outstanding support that Career Day brings to students and their future careers.”
