SALISBURY — Essie Academy held its inaugural golf fundraiser March 15 at Corbin Hill Golf Club in Salisbury with James Allison, the school’s golf coach, serving as event coordinator.

Allison, along with members of the board of directors Tina Foxx Wallace and Darrell Foxx, Sera Foxx, a teacher at the school and parents, Flosier Lucas, Gina Tafari and Charmaine Miller, started early to set up for the special event.

After checking in, participants started their day with practice strokes and breakfast provided by Chick-Fil-A. Throughout the day, they had the opportunity to enjoy a silent auction, networking, meeting Essie Academy’s students and lunch by Sumtin’ T’Eat.

Funds from the tournament, it was shared in a previous release, were raised to provide resources and equipment involved in developing a solid in-school golf program with a portion going to support the Shriners Children’s Hospital.

Essie’s K-8 students are learning golfing terminology and how to play golf and visit Corbin Hills during early fall and late spring to practice.

According to a release, during the tournament, golfers not only enjoyed 18 holes of golf, but the top four teams from the morning scramble went back to the course for “an exciting, pressure packed three hole alternate shot shoot-out.”

Multiple major sponsors helped with the event including Toyota-Ford dealership, Novant Health of Rowan, TrulyOb LLC, Man Up Monday, Salem Group Holdings, LLC, Truesdale Academy, Power Curbers and Southern City AME Zion Church, and it was shared that leadership at Essie Academy was very appreciative to have these sponsors to support its students.
