Area Sports Briefs: County golf championship will be decided at Warrior

The Rowan County Golf Championships are set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at Warrior.
Salisbury edged East Rowan by two shots last season at Crescent.
Co-medalists John McCoy (Salisbury and Landon Merrell (East) are back to lead their respective teams.
The last time the county tournament was held at Warrior was in 2016 when Logan Shuping led the Mustangs to a 26-shot victory.
HS basketball
Carson’s boys basketball team won’t have Colin Ball, a starting forward, next season.
The junior has decided to graduate from high school early and will attend UNC Wilmington.

West Rowan sharpshooter Will Givens plans to sign with Johnson & Wales on April 12.

East Rowan junior Mary Church has been offered by Bryn Mawr and Meredith.
HS wrestling
West Rowan’s Connor Misenheimer committed to Roanoke.
HS soccer
Lillian Jeffers and Leanna Rojas scored for East Rowan in Tuesday’s 10-2 South Piedmont Conference loss to Robinson.
Ava Quick and Kailin Bomely had assists for the Mustangs (5-8, 2-4).
HS baseball
South Rowan’s Marshal Faw was named MVP of the F&M Bank Classic Cannon Ballers Easter Tournament.
Faw had five hits, including a triple and a homer, and pitched five shutout innings. He stole six bases.
South won 8-1 against A.L. Brown in the championship game.
South’s Macon Fuller made all-tournament, along with Salisbury’s Evan Koontz and A.l. Brown’s Jesse Morton.
South was scheduled to get back in action against Mount Pleasant on Wednesday night.
College track and field
SALISBURY — In the Blue Bear Invite, Livingstone’s Matthew Blackmon won the 110 hurdles in 14.76 seconds, while LC’s Jayden Mungo won the 200 meters in 22.03.
Trinity Bumbry had a win for the Livingstone women with a 2:17 clocking in the 800.

RALEIGH — Catawba had three school-record efforts in the Raleigh Relays.
Erick Ramirez ran 14:10.65 in the men’s 5000 meters, while Mikayla Jones ran 16:41.11 in the women’s 5000.
Madi Clay ran 34:07 in the women’s 10,000 meters.

ELON — Pfeiffer’s Madison Lowery (South Rowan) tied her school-record 1500 in a meet at Elon. She ran 4:45.94.
Pfeiffer’s Katelyn Lentz (West Rowan) had the second-best 800 for the women’s program with a 2:24.30 clocking.
Pfeiffer’s Quintin Wilson (North Rowan) ran 16.07 in the 110 hurdles, the second-best clocking for the program.
American Legion
Rowan County Senior and Junior Lady Legion softball sign-ups are at 6 p.m. on April 14 at Harold B. Jarrett Legion Post 342 at 6 p.m.

Registration for Rowan County American Legion baseball is Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m. at Harold B. Jarrett Legion Post No. 342
Players must bring proof of age, driver’s license or original birth certificate, and proof of insurance.
A parent or legal guardian must be present to sign the Player Agreement.
HS tennis
Carson won 5-4 against East Rowan in South Piedmont Conference tennis on Tuesday.
Austin Atwell, Karson Sloop and Will Welch won singles matches for Cougars (5-7, 5-6). Sloop/Atwell and Welch/Griffin Bowman won in doubles.
Atwell won a marathon match at No. 1 singles against Owen Kesler.
Will Kesler, Josh Gardner and Sawyer Riley won singles matches for the Mustangs (7-3, 7-3). Gardner/Riley won in doubles.

West Rowan (4-7, 4-7) won 6-3 against Central Cabarrus in Tuesday’s SPC match.
Sam Gulledge, Jakobe Gardner, Isaiah Wood and Calen Batts won in singles for the Falcons. Max Brown/Gulledge and Wood/Batts won doubles matches.

South Rowan (1-12) won 9-0 against A.L. Brown on Tuesday in a non-conference match.
Carsten Carey, Sawyer Basinger, Leevi Fowler, Brylan Sloop, Kole Kinley and Troy Davies won in singles for South.
Carey/Bainger, Sloop/Kinley and Fowler/Ricky Moore posted doubles victories.
Local golf
In a McCanless Couples Captain’s Choice event, Todd Cleary, Calvin Smith and Pam & Ralph Carver placed first.
In second place in the standings is Lenoir-Rhyne with 894 points. The Bears placed second in men’s and women’s indoor track & field, as well as women’s basketball.
Catawba moved into third with 857.33 points by winning the women’s basketball title and taking home a share of the men’s basketball title. In fourth is Carson-Newman with 769.5 points, and Anderson in fifth with 631 points.
Limestone earned the No. 6 spot with 611 points, while Lincoln Memorial is No. 7 with 550.33 points. Tusculum is No. 8 with 513.5 points, followed by Newberry at No. 9 with 398.66 points, and Mars Hill at No. 10 with 387.5 points.
Rounding out the standings are Emory & Henry at No. 11 with 344.16 points, Coker at No. 12 with 258 points, and UVA Wise at No. 13 with 156.
