KANNAPOLIS — On March 27, the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA convened for its annual meeting, a gathering dedicated to expressing profound appreciation for the steadfast support of volunteers and board members. This event brought together community members for a moment of reflection, fellowship and prayer, underscoring the essential role played by volunteers in driving the Christian mission forward. 

Volunteers serve as the lifeblood of the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA, generously devoting countless hours to advancing the mission and supporting both the local community and YMCA staff teams. Their unwavering dedication and selfless contributions embody the spirit of service and compassion that defines the organization. 

At this year’s event, held at Cannon YMCA-Kannapolis, guests including the Mayor of Harrisburg, Jennifer Teague, and the Mayor of Kannapolis, Darrell Hinnant, recognized the significance of the YMCA’s impact on local communities. As the organization comes together to acknowledge the efforts of volunteers and board members, it recognizes their impact in shaping the fabric of the community and furthering the YMCA’s mission of promoting holistic well-being for all. 

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the 2023 Distinguished Service Awards, recognizing individuals whose commitment and service have made a difference. Cannon YMCA-Kannapolis: Anthony Brown, J.F. Hurley Family YMCA: James Meacham, Cannon YMCA-West Cabarrus: Dione Turner, Cannon YMCA-Harrisburg: Joe and Stephanie Briscoe, Saleeby-Fisher YMCA: Brad Miller, and the J. Fred. Corriher Jr. YMCA: Steve Foster. 

In addition to the Distinguished Service Awards, the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA bestowed its own honors. The 2023 Sir George Williams Distinguished Service Award winner is Dana Ritchie, and the 2023 Chuck Barringer Distinguished Service Award winner is Shane Wolford. New this year is the Lifetime Achievement Award which was presented to Richard “Jimbo” Shaver and Bobby Eagle.

These awards not only celebrate outstanding service but also embody the spirit of the YMCA’s commitment to building a stronger, healthier community for all.
