April is almost halfway over, and so many things are happening in Rowan County related to gardening.

April 20 is a big day in Salisbury. It’s not just Earth Day but also the opening day for the Salisbury Rowan Farmers Market. This is a significant event for our community, where we can all come together to support our local farmers and promote sustainable practices. You can look forward to fresh strawberries, lettuce, micro-greens, broccoli, kale, spring onions, locally raised meat, baked goods, beautiful cut flowers and much more. The market, located on 228 E. Kerr Street in the railwalk pavilion, is open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays beginning April 20 through December. For more information, follow them on Facebook at Facebook.com/SalisburyFarmersMarket.

Also on Saturday is Earth Day Jam, the annual fundraiser event for Happy Roots at Bell Tower Green Park. It’s not just about great music and yummy food but also fun vendors and educational opportunities. The Rowan County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers and Rowan County Beekeepers will be there, so be sure to visit them. For more information, go to www.earthdayjamnc.com.

On April 25, at the Salisbury Civic Center from 6-8 p.m., Hurley Park and The Rowan County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers will host a garden seminar with the renowned author and horticulturist, Brie Arthur. Brie is a celebrated bestselling author who captivates audiences with her dynamic presentations and groundbreaking gardening insights. She has authored two influential books, “The Foodscape Revolution” and “Gardening with Grains”. Brie’s contributions extend to the Emmy-winning PBS program, “Growing a Greener World,” where her expertise shines. Her commitment to fostering sustainable gardening practices comes alive on her widely followed YouTube channel, “Brie The Plant Lady,” where she shares expert advice and creative ideas. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a true gardening expert and be inspired to transform your own garden. Join us on April 25 at the Civic Center to learn about foodscaping in containers. Limited space? No problem! With author and horticulturist Brie Arthur, discover how to cultivate your favorite plants in compact spaces. Learn about ideal soil blends, optimal fertilization, and watering practices that nurture your plants to perfection. Register now for this free seminar at go.ncsu.edu/rowanbriearthur or call 704-216-8970 to secure your spot.

Last but not least, mark your calendars for May 4, 8:30 a.m.-noon, when the Rowan County Master Gardener Plant Sale will be back at 2727 Old Concord Road, Salisbury, for one day only. It’s the best plant sale in town.

Amy-Lynn Albertson is the director of the Rowan County Extension.
