SALISBURY — The grounds of Yadkin Path Montessori on Bringle Ferry Road in Salisbury were transformed on April 13 into a joyful spectacle as children proudly paraded their furry companions in the third annual Kids’ Dog Show.

The event, which showcased the special bond between children and their four-legged friends, was a heartwarming celebration of friendship and community spirit. Ten-year-old participant, Paisley Hope said, “I came to the dog show to have fun with my furry friend.”

From a fluffy labradoodle to a gleaming white shepherd and plenty of unidentifiable canine friends, the diversity of dog breeds on display mirrored the variety of the children’s personalities in attendance. Kids eagerly prepped their canine companions for their moments in the spotlight, some of them, handlers and their dogs, wearing matching costumes.

Dog trainer Tracy Crotts started the festivities with infectious enthusiasm by welcoming families and friends to the event and expressing her delight at the strong bonds between children and their beloved pets.

“Every dog in attendance today has a wonderful demeanor,” she said.

Each participant had the opportunity to showcase their pet’s talents and unique qualities and to complete the agility course with help from Crotts. From impressive obedience tricks to handlers carrying eggs while their furry friends accompanied them on-leash to heart-melting displays of affection, the performances were a testament to the love and dedication shared between children and their canine companions.

“My dogs are funny,” exclaimed Jack Buchanan, 6, who has two golden retrievers, with one of his dogs, Titan, taking the prize for catching a treat.

Amid the cheers and applause from the audience, Crotts faced the challenge of selecting winners in various categories including “Best Trick,” “Best Haircut” and “Most Athletic.” However, with each dog exuding its own charm and personality, every participant emerged as a winner getting a blue ribbon in various categories and a handler’s bag of gifts.

The Kids’ Dog Show served as a valuable educational opportunity for the children, fostering empathy, responsibility and respect for animals. Crotts gave tips on training, including how to teach their dog to value a frisbee and want to chase it. Through caring for their pets and participating in the event, attendees learned valuable lessons about compassion, teamwork, and the importance of positive reinforcement.

When asked, six-year-old handler, Yaretzi Jose said, “My favorite thing about (my dog) Bennie is his soft fur.”

“Seeing my child proudly walk alongside our family dog at the Kids’ Dog Show was a heartwarming reminder of the special bond they share. Our dog is a crucial part of our family,” said Stephen O’Flynn-O’Brien.

As the morning drew to a close, one thing was clear, the bond between children and their furry friends is truly a special one, and events like the Kids’ Dog Show serve as a special reminder of the joy and magic that animals and children bring into our lives.

The event was a fundraiser sponsored by Friends of Yadkin Path whose mission is excellence in childcare and education in Rowan County.  

“Today was a paw-some day filled with wagging tails, smiling faces and precious moments that we will treasure forever,” said Board President Nicole Jones. 

One of the grandparents expressed gratitude for the show as she said, “Thank you, Friends of Yadkin Path Montessori, for providing this event for the community!”
