High school track and field: Green Dragons sweep CCC Championships

TYRO — The jumps were the key for West Davidson’s boys and girls track and field teams in Tuesday’s Central Carolina Conference Championships.

West Davidson’s girls won their fourth straight title, while the Green Dragon boys ended Salisbury’s two-year winning streak.

West Davidson’s boys scored 178 points to edge Salisbury (175). North Rowan (69), Thomasville (68), South Davidson (64), East Davidson (58) and Lexington (54) were next.

West Davidson’s boys accumulated 78 points in the four jumps with a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system that scored eight places.

West Davidson had the only three pole vaulters at the meet, and that 1-2-3 finish meant a 24-point head start on the Hornets and everyone else.

West Davidson won the triple jump, went 1-2 in the long jump and went 1-3-4 in the high jump.

Salisbury’s strengths were the relays, where the Hornets scored 38 out of the maximum 40 points, and the individual sprints, where Salisbury piled up 55 points.

Salisbury won the 4×800 (8:31), 4×400 (3:27.45) and 4×200 (1:29.70). Thomasville edged Salisbury in the 4×100.

Deuce Walker led the Hornets. He won the 100 (11.15) and 200 (22.57) and ran on the winning 4×200 team and the second-place 4×100 team.

Jamal Rule won the 400 (50.05). Samuel Fatovic won the 1600 (4:46.16).

As he did in the county meet, North Rowan’s Kemyon Oglesby won both hurdling events, taking the 110 in 15.61 seconds and the 300 in 41.31.

West Davidson’s girls scored 180 points. Next were East Davidson (151), Salisbury (134), North Rowan (119), Lexington (57), Thomasville (4) and South Davidson (2).

West Davidson got 64 points in the jumps, including a 1-2 in the pole vault and a 2-3-4 finish in the high jump.

East Davidson’s 68 distance points pushed the Golden Eagles past Salisbury in the battle for second place. The Salisbury got 34 points in the four relays and 53 in the individual sprints.

Salisbury’s girls won the 4×100 (50.47) and 4×200 (1:45.70).

Tai’lah Ward won three individual events for the Hornets, the 100 (12.71), 200 (25.93) and 300 hurdles (44.50), in addition to running on the 4×200 winner.

Millie Wymbs won the 400 (1:01.22), took second in the 800 and ran on the 4×200 winner and the second-place 4×400 relay.

North Rowan girls won six events. Aniya Brown took three. she won the long jump (15.25), triple jump (31-0) and 100 hurdles (16.23). Her fourth event was the 300 hurdles, where she placed second.

Brittany Ellis swept the throws for the Cavaliers, with a 35-10 throw in the shot and a 122-1 fling in the discus.

Kimora Chawlk won the high jump (5-2).
