CHAPEL HILL — Former Salisbury High star Vance Honeycutt walloped another homer in UNC’s most recent baseball game.
That was the 19-2 romp against William & Mary on Wednesday. Honeycutt went 3-for-3 with his 18th homer of the season.
He has 55 career homers now, with eight games left in the regular season, plus the postseason. The program record of 57 has stood since the 1980s.
For the season, the junior center fielder is batting .330 with 50 RBIs and 64 runs scored. Besides the homers, he has 10 doubles and two triples.
He’s tied for eighth nationally in homers and also is eight in stole bases with 26 (in 28 attempts).
The next game for the Tar Heels (35-11) is on Tuesday against Campbell.
UNC will host Louisville for a series on Mother’s Day Weekend, which also is Graduation Weekend.
UNC also has a non-conference game left with UNC Wilmington and an ACC series remaining with Duke before the ACC Tournament.
While Honeycutt is a junior, there’s not much doubt he’ll be a first-round draft pick in July. so this is expected to be his final season with the Tar Heels.
