CHAPEL HILL — Vance Honeycutt (Salisbury) hit his 20th and 21st homers of the season on Friday as UNC’s baseball team routed Louisville 14-4.

The blasts gave Honeycutt, a junior center fielder, 58 career homers and the program record in less than three full seasons. The previous mark was 57 homers by Devy Bell, who finished his Tar Heel career in 1987. Bell was a four-year player as were most of the others on the Tar Heels’ all-time home run list.

Honeycutt hit 25 homers, a season record for the program, as a freshman and added 12 as a sophomore.

Honeycutt also ranks seventh in UNC history with 74 career stolen bases.

He leads UNC  in home runs, runs scored, total bases, stolen bases and extra bases hits.

Honeycutt is certain to be a first-round draft pick by MLB in July. Recent mock drafts had him going 11th to Detroit or 13th to San Francisco, but he could go higher than that. He has an unusual combination of  power, speed and defense and is moving into the conversation as one of the great players in program history.
