SALISBURY — Catawba College received a gift to build a new residence hall on campus. This contribution is designated for the construction of a 150-bed residential space, which will enhance the living experience of Catawba students for generations to come.
“We have received a series of transformational gifts over the past few years, and this contribution allows us to advance our aims to provide the very best living and learning experiences for our students,” Catawba College Vice President Meg K. Dees said. “We are continually amazed at the generosity of our supporters, and we are so grateful for this gift.”
The new residence hall, expected to house students in fall 2026, is now one of three capital projects on the Catawba campus. A renovation of the “Smokestack,” as a hub of student activity on campus, is currently in the design phase and should be completed in fall 2025, while a major renovation of Stanback Hall, one of the largest residence halls on campus, is slated for completion in fall 2026.
The residence hall will align with Catawba’s strategic initiatives to promote environmental responsibility, enhance student life and attract top-tier talent to the college. The vision for Catawba’s future was mapped out in its strategic plan — A College of Our Own.
When asked what this gift means for Catawba, President David P. Nelson said, “As a residential liberal arts college, we care very much about creating the conditions that best support our learning community. The ability to add a new residence hall, without taking on debt, allows us to renovate our existing living spaces with far less disruption for our current students, and will ultimately expand our residential capacity by nearly 20 percent.”
Nelson also expressed his gratitude.
“We are inspired by the many people who believe in Catawba College, and we are particularly grateful to those who choose to invest in the Catawba vision,” he said.
Design and determination of the location for the new residence hall will commence in the near future.
