SALISBURY — A man has been charged with felony fleeing to elude and misdemeanor child abuse after he fled from a traffic stop with a juvenile inside of his vehicle.
The incident began at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Tuesday, when an officer was patrolling the Eagle Heights neighborhood due to a recent outbreak of breaking and entering incidents in the area, said Major Justin Crews, the public information officer for the Salisbury Police Department. The officer reportedly noticed a car circulating the area and got behind it to investigate.
After the officer noticed the car run multiple stop signs, he attempted to stop the vehicle at the intersection of Windsor Drive and Idlewood Drive, said Crews. The driver of the vehicle allegedly refused to stop, turning onto Sells Road and attempting to flee north.
The vehicle eventually stopped in the 2200 block of Cauble Road, at which point the driver, identified as 26-year-old Otis Brandon Smith, was taken into custody without incident, according to Crews.
During a search of the vehicle, officers reportedly discovered that Smith had fled with a juvenile inside the car.
Smith was charged with felony fleeing to elude, misdemeanor child abuse, misdemeanor reckless driving with wanton disregard and misdemeanor speeding. He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center and given a $75,000 bond by Magistrate Mark Wilhelm.
