American Legion baseball: Rowan County gets started with 2-1 road loss

LEXINGTON — Rowan County opened the American Legion baseball season on Saturday night with a 2-1 loss to Davidson County at Holt-Moffitt Field.
The opener was originally scheduled for Newman Park, but was moved with Catawba playing at home in the Southeast Super Regional.
Jim Gantt will be piloting Catawba in the Division II World Series, so Seth Graham will be guiding the Legion team until Catawba’s season is over.
Rowan County got good enough pitching to win most Legion games on Saturday.
Alex Hagler (0-1) got the start and allowed two runs, one earned, in four innings. Drew Burton pitched scoreless ball in the fifth and sixth.
Rowan was limited to three hits. Gage Scruggs, Eli Graham and Southern Smith-Tilley, who played at Mooresville High, had the hits.
Scruggs drove in Graham with Rowan’s only run.
Rowan will return to action on Sunday afternoon with a 3 p.m. game at High Point.
Rowan is scheduled to play at Randolph County on Wednesday.

Kannapolis won four games to start the season, including a 2-1 win against Davidson County and three against Wadesboro and Concord.
Kannapolis is scheduled to return to action on June 2.
