SALISBURY — One man was hospitalized after police said that he was injured in a drive-by shooting on Saturday.

Police officers initially responded to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center after a 20-year-old man was admitted with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, said Major Justin Crews, public information officer for the Salisbury Police Department. There, the officers spoke with the man, who only told them that he had been shot on the side of the road somewhere near Salisbury High School.

The officers searched the area near the school and found shell casings in the 700 block of South Ellis Street, said Crews.

They also reportedly spoke to a witness who said that the man was walking along the side of the road when a passenger in a car driving by began shooting at him. Crews said that it appeared that the man began shooting back and at some point during the incident he was hit.

Police are continuing to actively investigate the incident, said Crews.
