ROWAN COUNTY — A man was hospitalized on Wednesday after deputies said that he barricaded himself into an RV in an attempt to avoid being arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service before eventually stabbing himself.
The man, identified as Steven Joseph Borek, was wanted by the Statesville Police Department for six counts of first-degree statutory sex offense and six counts of taking indecent liberties with minors, according to a release from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. U.S. marshals had reportedly received information that he was located in an RV at Pilot Travel Center, located in the 900 block of Peeler Road.
When marshals arrived on scene, Borek allegedly barricaded himself inside the RV and refused to come out. Deputies with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to assist the marshals and negotiators from the sheriff’s office made multiple attempts to get Borek to leave the vehicle, according to the release. The negotiators reportedly noticed during this time that Borek was holding a knife.
After the negotiation attempts were made, the Rowan County Special Response Team made a forced entry to the RV, according to the release. Inside, they reportedly found Borek on the ground with a self-inflicted stab wound to the neck.
Borek was transported to the hospital for his injuries. No officers involved in the incident were injured.
