Little League softball: Rowan 12U team advances to SE Regional

HUNTERSVILLE — Rowan Little League’s 12U softball all-stars have taken a big step.

Pitt County Little League won the state tournament hosted by Lake Norman Little League and gained direct entry into the World Series, as North Carolina is once again hosting the state tournament in the Greenville area.

Rowan Little League bounced back from a 6-1 loss to Pitt early in the tournament and won elimination games against Mallard Creek, Rutherford County and Johnston County.

A 7-4 win against Johnston County on Wednesday made Rowan the state runner-up. Rowan will represent North Carolina as state champions gather for the the upcoming Southeast Regional in Warner Robins, Ga.

Regional play is July 21-26, with the regional champion advancing to the World Series.

The Southeast Region includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

Rowan Little League’s 10U team is in Rocky Mount for the state tournament. The tournament opens Friday. Rowan will play on Saturday.

Rowan’s 8U team lost the championship game to Pitt County and finished as state runner-up.
