SALISBURY — A man has been charged after deputies said that he entered a store riding a bicycle, assaulted the store manager, attempted to steal items and then exposed himself to the responding deputies.

Deputies responded to Love’s Travel Stop on Peeler Road in reference to an ongoing physical disturbance at approximately 7 a.m. on Tuesday, according to reports. When they arrived, they found 46-year-old Arvin Junior Stevenson at the front of the store, said Captain Mark McDaniel, public information officer for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputies attempted to detain Stevenson, at which point he refused to obey multiple commands and began shouting profanities at the deputies, said McDaniel. Eventually, Stevenson allegedly exposed himself to the deputies until another deputy reportedly arrived on scene and they were able to take him into custody.

The store employees told the deputies that the incident had begun when Stevenson entered the store while riding a bicycle, said McDaniel. When the employees confronted him and told him to take the bicycle outside, Stevenson allegedly began threatening them and attempting to steal items from the shelves. The manager of the store attempted to get Stevenson to leave out the back door, during which time he made crude sexual remarks towards her and exposed himself, said McDaniel.

Eventually, the manager got Stevenson to the door, at which point he allegedly began making sexually-charged threats towards her and hit her on the chest. Stevenson attempted to go back around to the front of the store to reenter when he encountered the responding deputies, said McDaniel.

Stevenson was transported to the Rowan County Magistrate’s Office, where he was charged with misdemeanor simple assault with sexual motives; misdemeanor indecent exposure; misdemeanor communicating threats; misdemeanor larceny; misdemeanor second-degree trespassing; misdemeanor resisting, obstructing or delaying an officer; and a misdemeanor parole violation. He was given a $15,000 bond by Magistrate Mark Wilhelm and placed in the Rowan County Detention Center.
