SALISBURY — A woman has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon for the second time this year after deputies said that she recently assaulted a man with a knife, causing the victim to be hospitalized.

The most recent incident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 6:45 p.m., when deputies were called to a home on Grants Creek Road in reference to an ongoing physical disturbance, said Captain Mark McDaniel, public information officer for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

When the deputies arrived on scene, they could reportedly hear a loud verbal altercation coming from the inside of the home. When they approached the home, a male and a female exited the building, both with blood on them, said McDaniel. The deputies noticed that the male had a laceration to his hand and fingers.

When deputies spoke to the male, he told deputies that the two had gotten into a verbal altercation before he tried to leave and take the phone with him because he paid the phone bill, said McDaniel. The woman then allegedly began following him with a knife, threatening him with it, eventually cutting his hand.

The female told the deputies that she had grabbed the knife and cut the man with it because he was pushing her to the ground, said McDaniel. The deputies also reportedly noticed that she had superficial scratches on her person.

The deputies reportedly investigated the incident and determined that the victim had been obviously assaulted with the knife and had acted in self-defense afterwards.

The woman, identified as 22-year-old Mia Alyssa Botteon, was arrested and transported to the Rowan County Magistrate’s Office, where she was charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon. She was not given a bond by Magistrate Duffel due to the domestic nature of the charge.

The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment for his injuries, said McDaniel.

Botteon was charged with assault with a deadly weapon in January after deputies said that they responded to the home on Grants Creek after receiving a report that a man had been assaulted during a domestic dispute. When they arrived, they reportedly found a man on the property with an obvious laceration to his arm, which allegedly occurred when Botteon cut him with a knife after the two got into an argument.

Botteon told the deputies during that incident she pointed a handgun at the man after he refused to leave the home, said McDaniel. She allegedly said that the man then took the gun from her and disassembled it before putting his hands around her neck, at which point she used the knife. The deputies reportedly did not notice any signs of strangulation on her person at that time.
