SALISBURY — As the 10th Annual Rowan Chamber Dragon Boat Festival approaches at the end of this month, an inspiring team is making waves — both on and off the water. The Healing Dragons, a Charlotte-based dragon boat team of breast cancer survivors and supporters, are eagerly preparing to showcase their strength and unity on High Rock Lake at this year’s festival.

“Healing Dragons is a nonprofit organization. Our focus is to empower cancer survivors and supporters to be courageous through the team sport of dragon boat paddling,” said Eileen Pronobis, vice president of Healing Dragons.

The team was founded in Charlotte in 2009 and has grown into a beacon of hope and strength, bringing together more than 40 members who find confidence and solace through the ancient sport of dragon boat racing. In addition to competing in North Carolina, the team will race this year in South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Florida.

Dragon boat paddling is more than a sport for the Healing Dragons — it’s a journey of healing and support.

“For cancer survivors or those currently going through their cancer journey, dragon boat paddling is restorative. When you get on the boat, you’re rebuilding your stamina, strength and confidence,” said Pronobis.

According to the Healing Dragons, dragon boat paddling increases strength, improves range of motion, reduces pain and provides relief from chronic symptoms of lymphedema. The Healing Dragons practice twice a week April through November, which keeps members exercising regularly.

However, for the Healing Dragons, it’s not just about physical activity. It’s about being there for each other and supporting one another.

“We often say it’s one boat, one team, and that is true. It’s 22 people all working together to make the paddles move in and out in synchronization as one cohesive team,” said Pronobis.

The Healing Dragons also host a breast cancer support group, offering a safe space for members to share their experiences and provide mutual encouragement.

“The breadth of support and nurturing that the team members give each other is amazing,” said Pronobis.

The Healing Dragons are always welcoming new members to join their team.

“We welcome members of all ages, cancer supporters, cancer survivors and those going through their cancer journey,” said Pronobis.

The Rowan Chamber Dragon Boat Festival is a highlight of the year for the Healing Dragons. Long-time supporters of the event, the team cherishes the festival for its close-knit community feel and celebratory atmosphere.

“The Rowan Chamber race is one of our favorites for a couple of reasons. For one, it’s really close. It’s also very well organized. When you come into the event, it has a real festival-feel. In addition to the Dragon Boat races, they have many different kinds of food trucks and community vendors participating in the event, and it’s just a lot of fun,” said Pronobis.

In addition to the fun, festival atmosphere, the Healing Dragons look forward to friendly competition and reconnecting with familiar teams each year.

“Come to the Rowan Chamber Dragon Boat Festival and see us race,” said Pronobis.

The Rowan Chamber Dragon Boat Festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, at the Rowan Shrine Club on High Rock Lake, located at 6480 Long Ferry Road in Salisbury.

The festival includes the dragon boat races, vendors, food trucks and activities for the entire family. It is free to attend, and guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. No pets, coolers or outside food are permitted. Parking is $5 per car and benefits the East Rowan football team. Boats are welcome to view from the main channel or can dock behind the Shrine Club to enjoy the food and festivities.
