As Rowan Public Library’s Summer Reading fun is winding down, the last day to log reading hours is upon us. Children and adult summer reading participants who wish to qualify for prizes must submit their final reading hours by the end of day on Saturday, July 27. Teen Summer Reading participants’ last day to submit final reading hours to qualify for prizes was July 20. However, the Teen Summer Reading excitement has not finished just yet.
On Friday, July 26, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at RPL Headquarters (Salisbury), teens are invited to celebrate the end of Summer Reading with a National Teen Lock-In that includes dinner, games, door prizes, snacks and more. A permission slip signed by a parent or guardian is required to participate; slips can be picked up and dropped off at any Rowan Public Library location. Doors will open for teens attending the lock-in between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Lock-in activities are scheduled to run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Then, at 9 p.m., the Teen Summer Reading Finale will be held, and raffle prize winners will be announced. Winners need not be present at the Lock-In to win. The event ends at 9:30 p.m.; teens must be picked up by 10 p.m. For more information, contact Amanda at 704-216-8268.
On Tuesday, July 23, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at RPL Headquarters (Salisbury), teens ages 11-17 are welcome to expand their imaginations in a tabletop roleplaying game where they will slay dragons and find treasure. All materials for the game will be provided and snacks will be served. No prior experience with tabletop roleplaying games is necessary to join this grand adventure. To learn more, call Amanda at 704-216-8268.
Teens are also welcome to join us at RPL Headquarters (Salisbury) on Tuesday, July 23, at 2 p.m. for a Virtual Author Talk featuring Elizabeth Acevedo Watch Party. Elizabeth Acevedo is the Young People’s Poet Laureate and the New York Times bestselling author of The Poet X, which won the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, the Michael L. Printz Award, the Pura Belpré Award, the Carnegie medal, the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award, and the Walter Award. Teens will be able to watch the talk, enjoy refreshments and participate in activities themed around Elizabeth Acevedo’s books. This watch party is geared towards 9th-12th graders, though all are welcome. This free virtual program can also be viewed at your own convenience online at bit.ly/RPLVirtualAuthorTalks. Rowan Public Library’s Virtual Author Talk series is part of the Library Speakers Consortium. Registration is optional and library card numbers are not required. To learn more, call 704-216-8248.
