The August 2024 issue of Salisbury the Magazine has hit the newsstands revealing some up close views of the wonders of wildlife, nature and birds that Dr. Steve Coggin has captured with his camera.

Maggie Blackwell, editor of the magazine, shares the story of Coggin, retired Catawba College biology professor, in “Bird’s-Eye View: Dr. Steve Coggin has passion for photographing nature’s glory,” along with some of his photos and additional ones by Sean Meyers.

Maggie Blackwell also captures in her letter all that this particular issue of the magazine has to offer in her editor’s letter titled “In the heat of summer.”

Several stories by Ben White, entitled “Salisbury Speedway: Lee Petty was among NASCAR royalty to race here” and “Ghosts in the moonlight: NASCAR drivers got their start running moonshine,” both capture some history of the sport, some of those early drivers and some historic photos.

Another story, “The Salisbury Rowan Society of the Triangle,” by Maggie Blackwell, along with photos by Sean Meyers, documents the visit of this group to Salisbury in the Rowan Original section of the magazine. While the group is not from the area, it was started by Phil Kirk, a Salisbury native.

Learn about a new book entitled “The Hunter” by Tana French in Margaret Basinger’s story, “A Mystery featuring Rural Ireland.”

Check out the varied photos throughout the magazine, one in Through the Lens, another of a piece of watercolor art and two capturing a writing camp and a hospital auxiliary social.

Copies of Salisbury the Magazine are available around town or you can visit the Salisbury Post office and request a copy at the front desk.
