After 20 years as chairman of the American Red Cross, it is my profound honor to pay tribute to a woman who has dedicated her life to public service and humanitarian efforts: Senator Elizabeth Dole. On the occasion of her birthday, we celebrate her extraordinary achievements and the indelible mark she has made on our nation and the world.

Elizabeth Dole’s legacy with the American Red Cross is a testament to her dynamic leadership and compassionate spirit, following in the illustrious footsteps of our founder, Clara Barton. During her tenure as president of the Red Cross, Elizabeth guided the organization through pivotal times, ensuring that our mission to alleviate human suffering was carried out with unwavering dedication and effectiveness. Her commitment to volunteerism and community service has inspired countless individuals to join our cause, embodying the very essence of what it means to be a humanitarian.

Elizabeth Dole’s remarkable career extends far beyond her work with the Red Cross. As a United States Senator from North Carolina, she championed numerous causes, always prioritizing the well-being of her constituents and the American people. Her leadership as secretary of labor and secretary of transportation showcased her ability to navigate complex challenges and implement policies that have had lasting positive impacts on our nation.

Today, Elizabeth continues to transform lives through the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, which supports the more than 5 million caregivers in the United States, particularly those caring for wounded warriors. Her advocacy for military families and caregivers has brought much-needed attention and resources to this vital issue, ensuring that those who have sacrificed so much receive the support and recognition they deserve.

Salisbury, North Carolina, holds a special place in Elizabeth Dole’s heart. Born and raised in this vibrant community, she carries the values and lessons learned here with her in every endeavor. Salisbury is not just a hometown for Elizabeth; it is the foundation of her character and the wellspring of her unwavering dedication to service. The people and friends of Salisbury have always been her anchor, and she continues to maintain her home here, drawing strength and inspiration from the best hometown in America.

As we honor Elizabeth Dole on her birthday, let us also celebrate the community that shaped her. Salisbury, with its rich history and close-knit community, has produced a leader whose contributions have reached every corner of our nation and beyond. The support and love from her hometown have been instrumental in her journey, and for that, we are all grateful.

Elizabeth Dole’s life, leadership and legacy of service and compassion continues to inspire us all. In commemorating her birthday, may her remarkable journey of making a difference in the world continue for many more years to come.
